Wow.....clearly far too late in posting my thoughts but just happened to do an internet search on Gater and found this news. I had the joy of meeting Dave in the mid 90's. Our band at the time was recruiting a bass player and he answered the ad. I have to say that I was a massive Who fan at the time, and therefore I was also a huge Wholigans fan. I had seen the Wholigans numerous times and was blown away by Dave's skill. And now he's answering an ad to play with me?????? In a low key small town bar band? Our gigs, stories, laughs and good times for the next few years were epic. To say Dave was a big personality is like saying the Pacific Ocean is a bit of a swim. I want to estimate about 10-12 years ago, the Wholigans reunited and played London Music Hall. I caught wind and reached out to Dave through a website link. He immediately responded, we connected at the show and to my enjoyment and relief, he hadn't changed at bit. People come and go in your life time. Sometimes memory of them comes and goes as well. There is no way, I will ever forget Dave and the laughs we shared. Alot of hearts must of hurt upon hearing this news. Mine's a little despondent today.

Sending condolences to family and friends. It was awesome to have known Gator for so many years. I always had fun watching him play and on a few occasions had the privilege of sharing the stage with him. Gator was always happy to share his knowledge of music and I enjoyed the many stories of his life adventures. His positive energy, zest for life and infectious smile will never be forgotten.

So sorry to hear of Dave's passing. I built his last guitar for him, days before he passed. Dave was a monster bass player. He forgot more about guitar and bass than most people will ever know. He asked me for things few people have ever heard of. I will always remember the smile on his face and the sparkle in his eye when I would drop off one of his projects finished. Even though I was only a guy that worked on his guitars this has affected me a lot. I didn't think he would be gone so soon after he got it. I hope it brought him a little bit of joy.
Rest in peace Dave.

Absolute GENIUS on both bass and guitar. I have not ever known anyone so scary good.
Dave had a sweet spot every night where he was, in my opinion, the greatest bass player on the planet.
I know I took his talent for granted for many years but I am also guilty of over looking what a kind and generous soul he was.
Always willing to help and teach other musicians. Always upbeat and happy to see you.
The world was a better place when you were here Dave.
Rock is dead they say "Long live GATER"
I will never forget you.

I met Gater at a Wholigans show in 2013. I was at the bar early when they were still setting up. Before the band was to perform, Gater was hungry and decided to go grab a quick bite across from the bar. I too was hungry and asked if I could join him (a man I JUST met!). He smiled and said 'absolutely'! We walked over and had a quick dinner and he told me about his bandmates and his years in the Wholigans. I felt like I knew him for years. We became friends after this and I saw many more shows until he retired. I have not seen him since but, kept in touch over facebook here and there. He was a gentle soul and a super man. I will miss you, my friend xo. R.I.P. and keep slappin' that bass up there!

Gater was a brilliant lead guitarist as well. This pic is Dave playing I’m Going Home in 2012.

Seeing Dave as part of The Wholigans in 2003(?) in London… he was an explosive and brilliant bassist. Only friends on Facebook, but he was a much loved and beautiful guy. RIP, Dave; love, light and peace to you.
