Obituary of Dr. Jack L. Sales

Dr. Jack L Sales, MD, FRCSC

May 27, 1930 - June 17, 2023

Peacefully, surrounded by his family, Jack passed at the age of 93 at South Huron (Exeter) Hospital on June 17th, 2023.  Jack will be forever missed by his children, Doug Warwick (Shanthy), John Sales (Kate), Lisa Sales Furtney (Brad), Mark Sales (Kirsten) and the late Robert Sales (2010). Cherished and adored by his ten grandchildren, Peter and Jenna Warwick, Wyatt, Blythe and Sawyer Sales, Raquel, Luke and Brooke Furtney, Alden and Drew Sales.

Jack was pre-deceased by his parents George and Dora (Bennett), his loving wife Helen Sales, son Dr. Robert Sales and sisters Grace McGugan and Ruth McDonald. 

Jack was born in Toronto, Ontario on May 27, 1930, and grew up in Ridgetown where he worked hard at school and on the family farm.  Jack convinced his piano teaching father that he should go into medicine rather than become a concert pianist.  With his savings and a modest scholarship, Jack graduated from Medical School at the University of Western Ontario.  Jack pursued surgery under Dr Angus McLachlin, followed by Toronto residency in Urology under Dr’s Mitchell, Aberhart, Robson and Kerr. He continued Urology training under a travelling Fellowship before returning to practice Urology at St. Joseph’s Hospital in London, Ontario and was also an Associate Professor at Western.  As part of his practice, Jack was passionate about supporting rural community hospitals which included Mitchell, Exeter, and Wingham.  Jack taught Percutaneous Nephro Lithotripsy and Ureteroscopy and helped St Joseph’s become the Kidney stone centre for London and District.  As Secretary, then President of the North-Eastern Section of the American Urological Association, Jack secured funds for research and education programs, and eventually scholarships, earning the NS-AUA’s distinguished Service Award and being made an honorary member of the AUA.  Similarly, as Treasurer of the Canadian Urological Association and alongside Dr. Normand Sullivan, he raised money for the Foundations’ scholarship funds. Later, as President, he proudly hosted the annual CUA meeting in his hometown (London, Ontario) and received the CUA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003 in recognition of his remarkable achievements.  Following his retirement from St. Josephs Hospital at the age of 70, Jack continued to practice Urology in Texas and at the US Army base in Fort Benning, Georgia. Jack’s family, patients, colleagues, and the doctors he trained meant everything to him, and his spirit will live on through the incredible legacy that he leaves behind.

The family would like to thank the staff at South Huron Hospital, including Cara, Nathalie and Linda, for their kindness and compassion.

Family and friends will be welcomed at the LOGAN FUNERAL HOME, 371 Dundas St, London on Friday, June 23rd from 2-4pm and 7-9pm, followed by a funeral service at 10am at The Metropolitan United Church at 468 Wellington St. London on Saturday June 24, 2023.

Following the service, please join us at Spencer Hall (551 Windermere Rd.) at 12pm, where we will celebrate Jack’s wonderful life.
