Peacefully at University Hospital on Thursday, September 15, 2016, Helen Anas of London in her 96th year. Beloved wife of the late Sam G. Anas (1967). Loving and devoted mother to George (Reta Wammes) of London, James (Ann Kinmonth) of Burlington, Patricia Mitsis (John) of London, and Peter (Demetra Economos) of Potomac, Maryland. Cherished "Yiayia" to her eight grandchildren Matthew (Beth Cameron), Rebecca (Jeff Sammut), Mark (Julaine Hall), Kiersten Anas Byrick (Wil Byrick), Eleni Mitsis (Jim Kontogiannis), Demytra Mitsis (John Mihailidis), Georgia, and Sam. Dearly missed by her ten great-grandchildren Constantine and Elisa Kontogiannis; Hannah, Charlotte, and Alexie Anas, Cameron and Kyra Anas; Annie Byrick; Lucas and Jacob Anas-Sammut. Daughter of the late James P. Katsikas (1966) and Panayiotitsa (Bertha Heos) (1969). Predeceased by her dear sister Vasiliki (1928).
Born in St.Catharines Ontario on December 30, 1920, Helen moved to London as a young mother with her husband, Sam. Here they raised their four children in the family home on Princess Avenue where Helen continued to live following Sam’s untimely death. Family meant everything to her. Helen took great pride in maintaining her home for over 68 years. Helen was a founding member and the first President of the Orpheus Chapter 297 of the Daughters of Penelope in 1961 and also a long standing member of the Ladies Philoptochos Society of London. When she was young, Helen’s dream was to pursue a higher education but due to the Depression she had to forgo her studies. Helen’s proudest moments were to see all of her eight grandchildren achieve their full potential as university graduates. Helen was the Matriarch of the family and she will always be loved and forever remembered.
