Obituary of Fotini "Effie" Pliagas
December 23, 1935 – June 20, 2022
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Fotini Pliagas in her 86th year surrounded by her family at Arbor Trace Memory Care Center. Beloved wife of the late Anastasios Pliagas (1960), she will now finally rejoin her true love.
Fotini was the loving mother of George (Victoria) Pliagas and Vivi (John) Tryphonopoulos, and beloved grandmother ("yiayia") to her pride and joys Takis Tryphonopoulos, Tasso Tryphonopoulos, Andrew Pliagas, Deanna Pliagas, and Tina Pliagas. Fotini was dearly loved by her only sister, Vassiliki Giannoulas Farmakis (late Rizos Farmakis) and her nephews Eddy Farmakis and Terry Farmakis of Athens, Greece. She will be deeply missed by all of her cousins, nieces, nephews, and a large extended family in Greece and the United States.
Fotini was born in Trikala, Greece in 1935 and spent her younger years in Volos, where her father was a prominent banker. She married her husband Anastasios, who was a school teacher. They had their son George in Greece and then immigrated to London, Ontario in 1958, with hopes and dreams to extend his teaching career in this new country. Their daughter Vivi was born in Canada in 1959. After tragically losing her husband in a house fire in 1960, at the age of 25, a new Greek immigrant with two young children under the age of 3, Fotini faced the future in London. The Greek community became her family. With fierce determination, perseverance, and strong love to provide for her children, Fotini was an amazing mother who on her own, overcame the odds and all challenges and raised a son who became a successful surgeon, and a daughter as a university educator.
Her five grandchildren were also her pride and joy, and she loved them immensely. They were a big part of her life watching them grow into strong, successful young adults. Her life was always centered on her family. She was fiercely independent and enjoyed tending to her garden, knitting, cooking, and baking, especially during the holidays. Mom loved to go church, and her devout faith gave her strength.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the exceptional caregivers and staff at Arbor Trace Memory Care Center and Dr. Musani for their support over the past 9 years at Arbor Trace. To Father Konstantine Chatzis, a very special thank you for his spiritual support and prayers to mom and our family in her final days.
