Obituary of Dr. Thomas McLarty
McLARTY, Dr. T.D. Thomas Donald MD, FRCP (E), FRCS (C)
1925-2017
At Parkwood Institute, on Sunday, February 19 th , in London, Ontario, where he spent his working life, with great dignity and a gentleman to the end. For 60 years, Tom was the husband of his beloved Mary Elizabeth, (2010). He is the dearly loved father of Mary Katharine (Neil Young) of Mississauga, John (Carrie Wilson) of Kincardine, and Sarah (Gary Kirkham) of Atherton, California. Loving grandfather of Sarah (Cameron MacNeil), Emily (Andrew Choly), Rachel, James, Jack, Matthew, Christopher and Jennifer. Dear brother-in-law of Beth Brown of Burlington.
Dr. McLarty was a gifted surgeon with magic hands, and an early adopter of new technology. A lifelong learner and teacher, he pioneered laparoscopic surgery in Canada, and then taught it around the world. He was a faithful member and generous supporter of First St. Andrew’s United Church. He was a farmer who was never happier than when he was driving the combine, or growing hundreds of vegetables and flowers in his huge garden. He enjoyed most summers of his 91 years near Kincardine on Lake Huron.
Predeceased by his parents, John Stewart, and Mabel Jean (nee Johnston), his brother John, his wife Mary Elizabeth (nee Hallowell) (2010), and his dearest daughter Jane Elizabeth (1990).
Friends will be received at Logan Funeral Home, 371 Dundas St. (between Waterloo and Colborne St.) on Sunday, March 5 th from6 – 9 p.m. Funeral service will be held at First St. Andrew’s United Church on Monday, March 6, 2017 at 11 a.m.Private interment in Woodland Cemetery.
The family wishes to thank, Dr. Ken Leslie, the exemplary care of Joyce Hawkins (RN), Sonia McLeod (RN), Ruthann Thompson (RN), the compassion and caring of the Palliative Care Team at Parkwood Hospital (LHSC), The Staff of Malcolm Place Retirement Home in Kincardine where dad spent the last two years of his life, as well as dad’s great friend Dr. Fred Roberts.
