John Cronyn

Obituary of John Bruce Cronyn

With huge sorrow we announce the death of our beloved father, who passed away February 23, 2004. Predeceased by his dear Barbara, the love of his life, and whose loss he continued to mourn. He served his country in WWII as a lieutenant in the 23rd Field Company RCE and on loan to MI9 where he saw action in the battles of Normandy, Arnhem and the Rhine. Joined John Labatt Ltd. after graduating from U. of T. engineering in 1947 and was master brewer, Executive VP, Director, Vice Chairman of the Board and finally an Honorary Director over a period of 49 years. He left Labatt in 1976 to become a director of a number of public and crown corporations, including Canada Trust, London Life, Union Gas and Ontario Hydro. Always active in community and charitable organizations, he was past president of the London Chamber of Commerce and VP of the Ontario and Canadian Chambers. He was also a past president of the Boy Scouts and the V.O.N. of London and past warden of St. Paul's Cathedral. His interest in politics was evidenced by his presence on advisory boards of all levels of government and as a volunteer he chaired a committee for Premiers Robarts and Davis which re-organized the operations of the Province of Ontario and of Ontario Hydro. He was unfailingly generous with his time and resources in support of his family, community and many charitable causes. And, of course, being an old sailor he was known on occasion to enjoy a good caper with his many friends. He will be missed by all who knew him, but most keenly by Hume (Wendy), Marilyn (Jake), Martha and his grandchildren Chloe, Megan, Hamish, Koy and Blake. In Lieu of flowers a donation to the Barbara & John Cronyn Fund, The London Foundation, 130 King St., London ON, N6A 1C5. We would especially like to thank the dialysis unit at U.H. Celebration at St. Paul's Cathedral, 472 Richmond Street, London on Saturday, February 28 at 11 am. Reception will follow at The London Club. Logan Funeral Home in charge of arrangements 433-6181.
