Obituary of Stewart H. Rice

STEWART H. RICE, in his 74th year, passed away peacefully in his sleep at Parkwood Hospital, London, Saturday, February 24, 2007. He was the beloved husband and best friend of Shirley (Thompson) Rice and will be greatly missed by his daughter, Sandra Rice, London, and his son, Brian and his wife Lynda Rice, Ingersoll. He was a wonderful Grampy to Alex and Michael. He is also survived by his brother Douglas Rice (Ruth Rolston), Burlington, sisters-in-law Mary (Jim) Dougall of Exeter and Ruth Jackson of Stratford, step-brother-in-law Ken (Pat) Rolston of St. Mary’s and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents J. Archibald and Pearl L. Rice and brother-in-law Robert Thompson. After moving to St. Mary’s from his place of birth, E. Zorra Township, he was very active in football, cadets and basketball. Stewart worked for Ontario Hydro for 10 years, mainly at generating stations in Northern Ontario. In 1962, a change in career brought him to London where he was employed at Furtney Funeral Homes - Logan Chapel as Manager and Funeral Director until his retirement in 1995. Then it was back to the North where he built, with much help from family and friends, a cottage on the Montreal River at Latchford, where many good times were had and many wonderful friends were made. Until his illness, Stewart was an active member of the Kiwanis Club of Forest City-London, a member of the Fifty-Five Grads Club, L.E.A. (London Executive Association), a regular and willing volunteer at St. Jude’s Anglican Church, which he attended for forty years, and a volunteer for Canada Blood Services. He was also a member of Flesherton Masonic Lodge #333 A.F.& A.M. Visitation will be held at the Logan Funeral Home, 371 Dundas St. (between Waterloo and Colborne St.), London, on from Monday 2-4 pm & 7-9 pm. The funeral service will be held in the Logan Funeral Home chapel on Tuesday, February 27, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. P. Uptgrove officiating. Spring interment to take place at Avonbank Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Stewart’s memory to the London Regional Cancer Centre, Parkwood Hospital, or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
